We Are Called To Liberate The Oppressed
Good morning sojourn good morning. How many people here remember that song? now the young people sitting out there saying, is that from like the 1920s or thirties? Black and white. Hey kids. This is from the time when we were the remote control as a kid. Okay. Yes, there was black and white and that was actually staff.
[00:00:23] Sergeant Barry Sadler, United States, special force of seventh. And he was a member of the special forces, but he also wrote that song, the ball of the green beret. And can you believe in 1966, that song was number one in America for five weeks, top to billboard, top 100 charts. You think that could happen today and as well, that was a clip from when he first appeared on the ed Sullivan show.
[00:00:53] Now some of y’all remember ed SU Sullivan. Y’all really. But, and I do remember Sullivan, but what an incredible song, fearless men who jump and die, the brave men, the men who mean just what they say. The brave men are the green bere civil wings upon their chest. These are men they’re America’s best 100 men will test today, but only three will wear the green be.
[00:01:27] And see, I remember that song and of course it was the ball and it was the theme song for a movie. They had the same title, the green beret, maybe some of y’all remember the title character from that movie, the duke, John Wayne now growing up, who did not want, I looked at that say, I want some tiger striped camouflage uniforms.
[00:01:48] I want beret. I want to, you. Everybody looked at that and said, this is a model. This is an opinion. This is the American fighting man. But lemme introduce you to the real John Wayne. Next one. That’s John Wayne Walden fifth group United States, special forces. He was born on the 4th of July in grows back, Texas.
[00:02:16] Right now he lives up north of here in Arbor. Personal friend of mine. Let tell you a little bit about his story, why he is so special and why he is the embodiment of the words of that song. Back in April of 2008 and Afghanistan north stand province, there was a leader of one of the Islamic jihadist groups that they got, the mission, 12 men, one green beret, special forces team to go and try to capture this gentleman.
[00:02:45] He was in a mountain for city. That sat at 10,000 feet. Now let me just put that in perspective, when you’re on an airplane and you’re taking off and all of a sudden you hear that D and they come on and say, we are now 10,000 feet. You may use your personal computers. Imagine being engaged in a firefight for six and a half hours.
[00:03:09] At 10,000 feet, they were dropped in at 10 feet. They had to jump outta helicopters into. A cold river was deep water. Then they had to try to scale up to this mountain. Fortress, Taliban, everyone. They knew they were coming. And so they started to fire upon them. During that firefighter early on John Wayne waling, a sniper hits him below his knee and almost service his entire leg.
[00:03:41] What does that fearless man who will jump and die? He put a tourniquet on his thigh, cutting off the femoral arteries. He then gave himself an auto injection of morphine and he used his boot laces to fold his severed leg up against his thigh and strap it into his belt. And he continued to fight and every single one of them were wounded, but they got extracted out.
[00:04:09] And how did they get extracted out? They had. Jump off of a 20 foot cliff in order to get to their extraction zone. Imagine at 10,000 feet with only one leg jumping off a 20 foot cliff. Now, funny thing, I’ve been with him at several venues and there was one person that came up to John Wayne waling and said, Hey, I’m so sorry that you lost your leg.
[00:04:35] John said I didn’t lose my leg. I strapped it to my thigh. I came back with it. That’s how tough these men are. 10 silver stars. One male of honor from that one special forces, a.
[00:04:55] Let me show you a little clip about these fearless men.
[00:05:04] There’s a crowd advancing six, seven blocks from the crash, cigar and Gordon. Again, request permission to secure until convoy arrives over general crowds in the hundreds now where they are, they can see things mirror than any of us. They know what they’re asking. Let me talk to this is Garrison. I wanna make sure that y’all understand what you’re asking for.
[00:05:28] So say it out loud and clear. We’re asking to go in instead of a perimeter until. Port ride. And you realize that I cannot tell you when that might be. It could take quite a while. Roger that. And you still wanna go in there? Yes, sir.
[00:05:49] RO Harold cast general, your call. Roger, that go beat up. Put him in.
[00:06:10] On the deck over.
[00:06:23] Here’s good to see you. It’s good to see you. How back? That’s broken my back feels weird. Gotta get you outta here, buddy. Pulling him out cover
[00:06:35] put you down. See two words. The six, four crap. I secure perimeter you down. You all right? Yeah, I’m good. You’re locked and loaded. Hey, where’s the rescue spot where it
[00:06:49] rattle sugar. Gary Gordon operations, detachment team Delta force. The highest of the green. Be. The ball Mogadishu, 1993, Michael Durant, a member of the one 60 special aviation unit. His helicopter was shot down. The second Blackhawk helicopter was shot down. Those two gentlemen, as you saw depicted from that movie, Blackhawk down said, put me down and let us go in and try to save him knowing that there was probably not gonna be in relief.
[00:07:23] they ran out of ammunition and the forces against them kept coming. They were both killed. The bodies were stripped naked and dragged through the streets in Mogadishu. But Michael du Duran, he was captured and he made it out a lot. Fearless men who jump and die 100. We test today, but only three will wear a green beret.
[00:07:57] Now y’all sitting here saying, okay, Colonel, we got it. Now, what does that have to do with us? Sitting here in sojourn church? He has everything to do with you sitting here in sojourn church, turn to Gideon chapter seven, starting in verse one.
[00:08:15] Then, judges, I’m sorry. it’s about Gideon. I’m looking at Gideon. Okay. I’m so focused on, this guy, I like Gideon then JBA bow, which was his actual name that is Gideon and all the people who were with him rose early in camp beside the spring of Hart and the camp of midn was on the north side of them by the hill of.
[00:08:35] In the valley. The Lord said to Gideon, the people who are with you are too many for me to give Midian into their hands. Who have you ever heard someone say, you got too many people to go into a battle. Only God will say that for Israel will become too. Boast will say my own powers delivered me now.
[00:08:55] Therefore come proclaim in the hearing of the people saying whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gil. so 22,000 people return, but 10,000 remain, then the Lord said to getting the people are still too many, bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there.
[00:09:19] Therefore it shall be that he, of whom I say to you, this one shall go with you. He shall go with you. But everyone of whom I say to you, this one shall not go with you. He shall not go. So he brought the people down to the water and the Lord said to Gideon, you shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog lapse, as well as everyone who kneels to.
[00:09:44] now the number of those who laed putting their hand to their mouth was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knee to drink water, the Lord said to Gideon, I will deliver you with the 300 men who laed and will give the MI nice into your hands. So let all the other people go each man to his home. So the 300 man took the people’s provisions and their trumpet into their hands.
[00:10:11] And Gideon sent all the. Men of Israel each to his tent, but retained the 300 men and the camp of median was below him in the valley. And as you read furthermore, in chapter seven, you will know that Gideon broke those 300 and the companies of 100 and it defeated the Midianites because they fell upon each other because the spirit of the Lord was with them.
[00:10:35] If you think about that scene from Blackhawk down, when Michael. Had been up there flying in his 60 helicopter and all of a sudden an RPG hits him in the tail and he falls to the earth. That’s the exact same thing that God looked upon the world and saw that we had fallen. And he looked around much the same as it says, an is Isaiah six and eight, whom shall we send, who will go for us?
[00:11:02] And I know that our Lord and savior Jesus Christ stood up, as Isaiah said in six and eight, hearing my sin. just the same as those two special forces green beret said, put us down, put us in to save that one individual. That’s what the Lord has done for each. And every one of us, he came down and he said, I will save that one person.
[00:11:25] I will give my life for those living in a distressed and disturbed world. But how do you get to that point where you’re up there in a helicopter? mere mortal men. And you say, I have no fear as it said here, 22,000, when the Lord said and Gideon said, whoever’s afraid and trembling, you can go home.
[00:11:49] If someone were to ask you today, are you afraid and trembling, would you go home if you were up there in that helicopter, would you be willing to go down and be put. because see what God is looking for right now. He’s looking for his own special forces here on earth. He’s looking for men and women who are willing to say here am I sin me, men and women who are saying, I will go down into the disturbed trouble areas.
[00:12:17] I will do what it’s necessary because just the same as Duran’s helicopter represents that fallen world. We are living in a fallen. When you think about the fact 1966, I’ll admit I was just five years of age, but 1966, that song was number one in the United States of America for five years. And none of us in here believe that song could be number one today that represents a falling in our character in our honor, who we are, our soul, our very nature.
[00:12:48] And so God is looking for those people who will say put me down, but the bottom line is. It ain’t easy to become a green beret. It takes about a year to 18 months of training. And before you even get to go through the special forces course, you gotta go through what is called special forces assessment course much the same as God said here, take ’em down to the river and let’s see if they’re gonna make it into that three.
[00:13:16] and I like that. Number 300, 300 has a magical meaning. If you all know the story about Leitis the king of the Spartans, how many did he take to stand in the gap at the monopoly? He just took his personal guard, his special forces of 300. That’s what you are for our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. And you think about it when the Jews saw Jesus, they were like, I kind him, what Duran said, you’re it?
[00:13:43] Yeah. Cuz the God of angel arm. He don’t need to come with a whole bunch of folks come on. Cause he got all power in his hands. And so he comes and that’s how they were able to defeat the million Knights. And so you don’t need a whole bunch of folks. Yeah. If God’s on your side, you don’t need a whole bunch of folks.
[00:14:00] If you are going out there and you willing to go through the hard training, the problem with Christians today is that we don’t want to go through the hard training. Come on. When someone comes up and says, are you afraid and Tring? Yeah, I don’t wanna be part of. It’s a little tough when they say you go down to the river, eh, I’m gonna, I’m not ready to go and do this thing.
[00:14:20] See, it’s real easy to take that easy road, but we are called to be his warriors. What did he refer to? Gideon ass warrior. God sees each and every one of you as warriors. And see, when I think about. What we must do as Christians, you turn over to Romans 12 and two. And what does it say in Romans 12 and two?
[00:14:46] Because too often, we as Christians, we don’t want to get our hands dirty. We don’t wanna, make people mad of us at us. We want to, God is love. Love is God. And yeah, God is low, but you know what God said in 12 two Jesus said, and through Paul and do not be conformed to this. But be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you may prove what the will of God is.
[00:15:09] That which is good and acceptable and perfect. A soldier shows up to special forces assessment course. If he makes it through in a year and a half, he’s been completely transformed. Are you being completely transformed? Are you willing to go out there and completely transform the world? Or do you want to be conformed to it?
[00:15:29] Let me tell you something. There’s a whole bunch of people that can call themselves a. there ain’t that many people that can call themselves the green beret. And so what do you wanna do? There are a lot of big old churches out there you can go to. And, they got the big old stage and they got the big old worship teams and they got the big old congregation and the pastors up there wearing, real designer suits and everything.
[00:15:53] I ain’t got nothing designer on me right here. I just got some nice cheap jeans. There’s some nice. But the bottom line is it, ain’t about talking to talk. It’s about walking the walk and there are so many people that don’t want to be in those uncomfortable situations. They want to be able to go. And as it says, second, Timothy chapter four, they want to have their ears tickle.
[00:16:12] God don’t need them. Those are the fearful. Those are the trembling. When I see churches that are going around, they got rainbow flags on it. When I see churches got black lives matter banners. That’s not part of God’s special forces. Now they can say that they’re a church. They can say that they’re Christians, but they ain’t the ones that God wants to be the tip of the spear.
[00:16:32] That’s right. Come on. Soldier needs to be the tip of the spear. Yeah. And when I turn over to first, John in chapter four, starting in verse one, this is what you have to do. And this is what God does. There’s nothing wrong about being tested, having standards. And first John. Chapter four, starting of first verse.
[00:16:54] It says beloved do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world by this, the spirit of God, every spirit that confesses. That Jesus Christ has come in. The flesh is from God and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.
[00:17:15] This is the spirit of the antichrist of which you have heard that is coming he’s here. And now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children and have overcome them because greater as he who is in you than he, who is in the world, they are from the world. Therefore they speak as from the world and the world listens to them.
[00:17:34] We are from God. He who knows God listens to us who is not from God, does not listen to us by this. We know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Pastor Chris, as he said, we have a lot of good conversations and there have been some moments when pastor Chris was a little hurt, maybe he don’t want me to share this, but that’s okay.
[00:17:53] He got a bad foot. And so he can’t get up here quick enough.
[00:18:00] but there have been people in this church that have come to him. I don’t wanna be part of this anymore. I think you’re going too far. You’re not doing what I think needs to be done. I don’t want to be involved in these issues or anything like that. See, those are that 22,000. They’re a fearful and trembling.
[00:18:18] And what I would tell pastor Chris, I said, you stick to the word, you preach the word in season and out. And for everyone that leaves there will be five to 10 that show up. And you have seen that happen here in this church right now, cuz God is looking for a special forces team. And I think if any place that this going to happen, it should happen out of this church because right here in Dallas, Fort worth area, folks are hurting.
[00:18:42] Yeah. And we need to have a church that is raising up people that will say, put me down, put me in. Yeah. I remember when I first met Marvin Lowe here and Marvin just regular, everyday businessman up there in Frisco. And all of a sudden, Marvin said, I’m thinking about running for school board. I said, you sure about.
[00:19:03] He said. Yeah, I said, because that’s the most important elected position in the United States of America. See Marvin was up there in that helicopter and Marvin saw distress in our schools and Marvin turned around and said, put me down. Okay. And he does not care about what may happen to him personally.
[00:19:22] What he cares about is that he can save your children and grand. From a failing school system. And I know that you were here and you talked about what’s going on and that’s what we need. We need to have those people with that courage. God did not call us to be wimp, winers and whistles.
[00:19:35] Didn’t you just talk about, if God, before you, who can be against you, no weapon form against you, so pro so what are you afraid of? Yeah, cause it says in Philippians one in 20. to live as Christ to die as game. You’re the most powerful weapon out there because you win no matter what.
[00:19:55] Amen. So why don’t you want to go in? Why don’t you wanna do what is necessary? Why don’t you want to go through the hard training? Why don’t you want to take the tough mission? Because God is not looking for the folks that are already equipped. Yes. That ain’t how he rolls. Yeah, God is looking to equip those that he calls God is not looking already for the extraordinary person.
[00:20:15] God is looking for the ordinary person so that they can do extraordinary things, which is exactly going right back to what he said here to get in. I don’t want you man to be taking the credit for amen. That’s right. That’s why I don’t need 32,000. I only need 300 and I will go with them cuz I’m the God of angel armies.
[00:20:37] Amen. Put up the little symbol there. That’s the symbol. That’s the crest of the United States, special forces, Latin words. Dereo Lee, Ben, anybody here study Latin. I didn’t either, but those words mean to liberate the oppressed. That’s the motto of the United States special forces. And if you wanna really think about it, that’s our motto.
[00:21:06] That’s right, because our job is to liberate the oppressed, the people that are out there, that oppressed from sin. And if you are fearful, if you are afraid, then you’re not ready to be on this special forces team. When pastor Chris talks about go out and be the church to the unchurch, he’s basically telling you to go out and liberate the oppressed.
[00:21:27] And I saw this man do it with my eyes. When we were up in Columbia, South Carolina, I gotta tell you something. He likes to. And he went out and ordered so much. Dogone barbecue. I waited for 45 minutes for them to fulfill the order. And there was only about six of us. We couldn’t eat all that food, but what did this true man of God?
[00:21:48] What did this special forces 18 leader do? He said, Colonel let’s get together and let’s go out and find some homeless people. That’s good. That’s good. He was still thinking about liberating, their press. And he didn’t just go out there and give him food. he went out there and prayed with him. He went out there and explained who he was.
[00:22:07] He went out there and shared the gospel. That’s what we’re supposed to do. That’s how you liberate the oppressed. Amen. But are you willing to come down out of the helicopter onto the ground and just save one sugar and Gordon who went on post immensely and got a medal of. but Michael Duran is a lie because of them.
[00:22:32] And see, the thing I want you to understand is that when you talk about 100 men will test a day and women, but only three will wear the green beret man gives out a green beret, but you don’t want to know what, if you can step up in this moment for God. Amen. You ain’t gonna get a green beret. You get a crown of glory.
[00:22:49] Amen. Amen. Which is much better than any dog going green bere. You don’t get a me of honor or silver star. You get eternal life with. You get to walk the streets of gold. Amen. That’s what you get to have. That’s what you should want every single day. You wake up. We are on a battlefield. Yes. Yeah. And you should look over and say, put me down.
[00:23:10] Let me close with this quote from an incredible man by the name of Thomas Payne, these are the times the tribe men’s soul. The summer soldier and the sunshine Patriot will in this crisis, shrink from their service. Sojourn does not need summer soldiers. Sojourn does not need sunshine Patriots. If you wanna step up, be a part of God’s special forces team.
[00:23:37] If you wanna be a summer soldier and sunshine, Patriot, there’s a plenty of other churches you can go to, but that’s not what pastor Chris is talking about. That’s not what it means to go out and liberate the.
[00:23:49] but he, that stands by it now deserves the love. And thanks of men, tyranny, like hell is not easily conquered yet. We have this constellation with us that the harder, the conflict, the harder the battle being put down and having to scale and do a fire fight for six and a half hours at 10,000 feet, the more glorious is the tri.
[00:24:14] when we look around and we see that we can restore Dallas Fort worth, we can restore Texas. We can restore the United States of America to the kingdom of God, cuz we seen God bless America. Remember that we don’t see government bless America. That’s what we should wake up every day to restore. And when we do that then the triumph is Glor.
[00:24:33] What we obtain too cheap. We esteem too lightly. It is dearness only that gives everything’s value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods. And it will be strange. Indeed. If so, celestial, an article is freedom should not be highly rated. Never forget. Second Corinthians three 17. The Lord is the spirit and where the spirit of the Lord is.
[00:24:59] There is. Amen. Are you ready to be on God’s special forces team? Are you ready to step up and be the tip of the spear? Are you ready to go out every single day of your life from this moment on and live by the model de PSO libe to liberate the oppressed from the chains of sin and the evil one.
[00:25:27] Put me. Yeah no it’s good. Fearless men who jump and die, men who mean just what they say, the brave men of the green beret 100 will be tested, but don’t you want to be in that remnant that gets the crown of glory. God bless you all. And let’s go out and win it for Jesus. Amen.
